What Are Same-Day Dental Crowns?

Same-day crowns are high-quality ceramic crowns designed and manufactured in practice using advanced digital scanning and CAD-CAM technology. CEREC CAD-CAM technology is a chairside system that digitally scans your tooth, designs the new crown on-screen, and mills it from a ceramic block in our in-house milling unit.

The result is a high-strength, tooth-coloured restoration that can be fitted in just one visit. Instead of taking traditional moulds and waiting for a laboratory, we can scan your tooth digitally, design your new permanent crown and create it on-site during the same visit. As set out in the GDC’s standards for dental professionals, our team explains every stage of treatment before proceeding so you can make a fully informed decision.

Benefits of Same-Day Crowns

Here is what makes same-day crowns a practical choice for many of our patients in Glasgow:

  • Crown designed and fitted in one appointment

  • No temporary crown needed

  • Precise digital impressions for comfort and accuracy

  • Strong, durable and natural-looking ceramic

  • Improved comfort with fewer appointments

  • Ideal for busy schedules or urgent repairs

You can also have confidence in the clinical evidence behind the treatment. Research published in the International Journal of Computerised Dentistry found a survival rate of 95.5% across 2,328 CEREC restorations at nine years, which is comparable to the results you would expect from a traditionally made crown.

When Are Same-Day Crowns Suitable for a Damaged Tooth?

Same-day crowns can be an ideal option if you have:

  • A cracked or broken tooth

  • A tooth weakened by a large filling

  • A damaged tooth needing urgent restoration

  • An old crown requiring quick replacement

  • A cosmetic concern where you want fast improvement

  • A tooth that may require protection after root canal treatment

We assess suitability during your consultation and will always recommend the most suitable and predictable treatment for long-term health. A traditionally manufactured crown may be better suited to some cases, and we will always advise you honestly. You can explore the full range of dental treatments we offer in Glasgow if you are considering other options.

We also offer Denplan care plans to help spread the cost of treatment, so you can find an option that fits your schedule and your budget.

The Same Day Crown Process

Here is what to expect when you book a same-day crown at Michael Kelly Dentistry.

We examine your tooth and take digital scans to confirm that a crown is the right solution. We discuss your goals and explain the full process.

We shape the tooth gently under local anaesthetic so the custom crown can fit securely. We use numbing gel beforehand to help keep you comfortable during treatment.

A digital scanner captures a precise 3D image of your teeth. This replaces traditional moulds and provides highly accurate results.

Using advanced CAD-CAM software, we design a natural-looking crown that matches the shape, size and shade of your natural teeth.

The design is sent to our in-house CEREC milling unit, which creates your crown from high-strength ceramic. This process usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes.

We check the crown for fit, comfort and colour. Once suitable, it is bonded securely into place. You can leave the practice with your final restoration on the same day.

Same Day Crowns vs Traditional Crowns

Both options provide excellent results. The right choice depends on the complexity of your case, which we assess at consultation.

Dental Care Tips: How to Care for Your Same-Day Crown

Looking after your crown is straightforward, and with a little consistency, you can achieve a well-established, lasting result.

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste to help maintain the natural shine of your ceramic restoration.

  • Floss or use interdental brushes for thorough dental care around the crown.

  • Avoid biting very hard objects to protect the appearance of your crown.

  • Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth; our staff can advise you on this at your next examination.

  • Attend regular hygiene appointments with our team for expert care and to keep the tissue around your crown healthy.

The convenience of a same-day crown extends beyond the procedure itself. Since we use advanced technology and mill your restoration in our own dental lab, we can also review the fit at any follow-up appointment and make adjustments quickly if needed.

Whether you came to us for a one-day crown or a planned restoration, the same standard of care applies to every patient, and we are always here if you have questions about your aftercare.

Comfortable Treatment for Anxious Patients

We focus on gentle, pain-free dentistry. The same-day crown process is straightforward and performed under local anaesthetic using modern techniques to ensure your comfort. We take time to walk you through the procedure from start to finish, so you always know what to expect.

For very nervous patients who find dental visits difficult, IV sedation is available and is administered by Michael Kelly, our friendly sedation dentist. Topical numbing gel is applied before any injection to help manage discomfort from the outset, and our in-house same-day technology means there is no need for a second visit.
